Here is how to open ODT file on iPhone when the Files app will not show it: open the free ODT to PDF converter in Safari, pick the file and download a PDF that every iPhone can read. If you need to edit the text, use the free Microsoft Word app (it opens ODT read-only and lets you save a DOCX copy) or a dedicated OpenDocument viewer from the App Store.

iOS has no built-in ODT support, so tapping the file usually shows a blank or garbled preview. We get ODT files from clients regularly, so these are the four methods we actually use on our own phones, plus fixes for the errors people hit most.

Quick answer: Four free ways to view or edit an ODT document on an iPhone:

  • Fastest, no app: open the LeadCanal ODT to PDF tool in Safari, choose the file, tap Convert to PDF and open the result. The file stays on your phone.
  • To edit: open it in Microsoft Word for iPhone, tap Allow when asked, then Duplicate to save an editable DOCX copy.
  • Offline reading: install the free OpenDocument Reader app, which also opens password-protected ODT files.
  • Already use Google: upload the file to Google Drive and open it with Google Docs.

Why won’t my iPhone open an ODT file?

An ODT file is a text document in the OpenDocument Text format, the default format of LibreOffice Writer and Apache OpenOffice. It is an open standard maintained by OASIS and published as ISO/IEC 26300.

Apple’s Files app, Mail and Quick Look preview handle PDF, Word and Pages documents, but iOS does not read OpenDocument files on its own. An ODT is really a ZIP archive of XML files, so the preview either shows nothing or shows raw characters. Pages does not import ODT either.

So you have two choices: turn the ODT into a format the iPhone already understands (PDF or DOCX), or install an app that knows how to read OpenDocument.

How to open ODT file on iPhone: which method fits you?

Method Cost File uploaded? Can you edit? Best for
LeadCanal ODT to PDF in Safari Free No, runs in the browser No (read, share, print) Reading, forwarding or printing quickly
Microsoft Word app Free app Yes, converted by a Microsoft online service Yes, after saving a DOCX copy Making changes and sending back a Word file
OpenDocument Reader app Free with ads, paid Pro version No, works offline Light edits only Opening many ODT, ODS and ODP files
Google Drive and Google Docs Free with a Google account Yes, stored in your Drive Yes, as a Google Doc Sharing and editing with others

Method 1: Convert the ODT to PDF in Safari (no app needed)

This is the method we reach for first. A PDF opens in Files, Mail, Messages and Books with no extra apps, and our free ODT converter keeps headings, bold and italics, lists, tables, images and footnotes.

  1. Save the ODT to your iPhone. In Mail, touch and hold the attachment and choose Save to Files. In Messages or WhatsApp, use the Share button and pick Save to Files.
  2. Open Safari and go to leadcanal.com/odt-to-pdf.
  3. Tap Choose ODT files, then Browse, and pick the document from Files. You can add several ODT files at once.
  4. Tap Convert to PDF and wait a few seconds while the pages are laid out on the document’s own page size and margins.
  5. Tap the download link. Safari saves the PDF to the Downloads folder in Files, where you can open, share or print it.

Our converter only accepts .odt and flat .fodt text documents, and it checks the first bytes of the file before opening it. Spreadsheets (.ods) and presentations (.odp) need one of the app methods below.

How do you get selectable text in the PDF?

The standard download is built as page images, which is perfect for reading and printing. If you need to copy text or search inside the PDF, convert a single file and tap Open the print view. In the print options, use the Share button at the top to save the result as a PDF with real text.

Method 2: Open the ODT in Microsoft Word for iPhone

Microsoft’s support page on viewing ODF files in Office for iPhone and iPad confirms that Word can open .odt files. There are two catches.

  • It needs the internet. Word sends the file to a Microsoft online service to convert it, and asks you to tap Allow the first time.
  • It opens read-only. To make changes, tap Duplicate to save a copy as a .docx file, then edit that copy.
  1. Install Microsoft Word from the App Store and open it.
  2. Tap Open, choose where the file is (On My iPhone, iCloud Drive, OneDrive) and tap the ODT.
  3. Tap Allow when Word asks to convert the file.
  4. Read it, or tap Duplicate to create an editable DOCX copy.

Use this method when the person who sent the file expects edits back. Remember that the returned file will be DOCX, not ODT, unless they can open Word files on their side.

Method 3: Use an OpenDocument viewer app

If ODT files arrive often, a dedicated viewer saves time. OpenDocument Reader is free with ads, needs iOS 15 or later and opens ODT, ODS, ODP and flat ODF files, plus Word and PDF documents.

  • Works offline, so the document is not sent anywhere.
  • Opens password-protected OpenDocument files.
  • Editing is limited to small fixes in the free version. Larger edits need the paid Pro app.

After installing, open the ODT in Files, tap the Share button and choose the app, or open the app and browse to the file.

Method 4: Open it with Google Drive and Google Docs

Google Docs has supported OpenDocument files since 2014. On an iPhone, upload the ODT with the Google Drive app (tap the plus button, then Upload), then open it from Drive. Opening it with Google Docs creates an editable Google Doc copy that you can share, comment on or download as PDF or DOCX.

If the app does not offer Google Docs for that file, open drive.google.com in Safari, request the desktop website from the page menu, and use Open with, then Google Docs. This is the most work of the four methods, and the document ends up stored in your Google account.

Worked example: a client sends a proposal as an ODT

This happens to us regularly. A client writes a brief for a lead list in LibreOffice and emails it over as an .odt while we are away from a laptop.

  1. We save the attachment from Mail to the Downloads folder in Files.
  2. We open the browser-based ODT to PDF tool in Safari, choose the file and convert it.
  3. The PDF opens straight away, so we read the brief, check the target job titles and industries, and reply the same hour.
  4. If the PDF is too big to attach to a form or CRM, we run it through the PDF compressor before forwarding it.

Nothing is uploaded at any step, which matters because briefs like this often contain pricing, client names and internal targets.

Why keeping the file on your phone matters

ODT files are common in schools, universities, public offices and companies that use LibreOffice, so they often hold contracts, CVs, grade reports or personal letters. Our converter runs entirely in Safari using your iPhone’s own processor. The file is never uploaded to LeadCanal or anyone else, and nothing is stored on our servers. Close the tab and it is gone.

Word and Google Docs are trustworthy services, but both send the file to a cloud server. For sensitive documents, choose the in-browser converter or an offline viewer app.

Troubleshooting: common ODT problems on iPhone

Problem Likely cause Fix
Files shows a blank page or random characters iOS has no ODT viewer Convert to PDF in Safari or open it in Word
Only “Preview” appears, no app to open with No installed app claims the ODT type Install Word or OpenDocument Reader, then use Share
Word asks to connect or allow conversion Word converts ODF online Connect to Wi-Fi or data and tap Allow
Word will not let you type ODT opens read-only Tap Duplicate and edit the DOCX copy
“This file is not a valid ODT document” The file is damaged, renamed or not a text document Ask the sender to export it again, or try an app for .ods and .odp
Password prompt or file will not convert The ODT is encrypted Open it in OpenDocument Reader with the password
Cannot find the downloaded PDF Safari saves to a download folder Open Files, tap Browse, then Downloads
Fonts look different The original font is not on the iPhone Ask the sender for a PDF, or accept the closest match

What should you do after the ODT opens?

Most people want to send the document on, sign it or print it. A few next steps we use:

Frequently asked questions

Can an iPhone open ODT files without an app?

Not natively. The simplest app-free route is to convert the file to PDF in Safari with the ODT to PDF converter, then open the PDF in Files.

How to open ODT file on iPhone for free?

All four methods in this guide are free: our browser converter, Microsoft Word for iPhone, OpenDocument Reader and Google Docs.

Can Pages open an ODT file?

No. OpenDocument is not among the formats Pages imports. Convert the ODT to PDF or DOCX first.

Can I edit an ODT file on my iPhone?

Yes. Open it in Word and tap Duplicate to save a DOCX copy, or open it with Google Docs. OpenDocument Reader allows small edits.

Does Microsoft Word for iPhone need a subscription to open ODT?

Microsoft’s page does not mention one for viewing. It does say you need an internet connection and must allow the online conversion.

Do the same methods work on iPad?

Yes. Safari, Word, OpenDocument Reader and Google Drive all work the same way on iPadOS.

Is it safe to open an ODT file from an unknown sender?

Only open documents you expect. Our converter reads the text and layout only, never runs macros or scripts, and refuses files whose content does not match an ODT.

What about ODS and ODP files?

Those are OpenDocument spreadsheets and presentations. Word’s companions Excel and PowerPoint, OpenDocument Reader and Google Drive can open them.

Conclusion: key takeaways

Knowing how to open ODT file on iPhone comes down to one choice: convert it to PDF when you only need to read it, or use Word or Google Docs when you need to edit.

  • iOS cannot read ODT on its own, so the Files preview looks blank or garbled.
  • Convert ODT to PDF in Safari with LeadCanal’s free tool, with no upload and no app.
  • Word for iPhone opens ODT read-only; tap Duplicate to edit a DOCX copy.
  • OpenDocument Reader works offline and opens password-protected ODT files.
  • Google Docs can edit ODT files, but the file is stored in your Google account.
