Here is how to convert ODT to PDF without buying anything: drop the file into a free ODT to PDF converter that runs in your browser, or open it in LibreOffice and choose File, then Export as PDF. Google Docs and Word can also open ODT files and save them as PDF, and LibreOffice can batch convert a folder from the command line.

We built our converter because client documents reach us in every format, ODT included. Below are the methods we use on each platform, plus fixes for font and layout problems.

Quick answer: The fastest free ways to turn an ODT file into a PDF:

  • Any device, no install: open the LeadCanal ODT to PDF tool, add the file and download the PDF. The file never leaves your browser.
  • LibreOffice (Windows, Mac, Linux): File > Export as PDF, pick your options, click Export.
  • Google Docs: upload the ODT to Drive, open it with Google Docs, then File > Download > PDF Document.
  • Microsoft Word: open the ODT, then save or export it as PDF. Check the layout first.
  • Many files at once: run soffice --headless --convert-to pdf *.odt.

What is an ODT file?

An ODT file is a text document saved in the OpenDocument Text format. It is the default format of LibreOffice Writer and Apache OpenOffice Writer, and it is part of the OpenDocument Format (ODF), an open standard maintained by OASIS and published as ISO/IEC 26300.

Under the hood, an ODT file is a ZIP archive holding XML for the text and styles, plus any images. That is why a good converter can read it without the original word processor.

People convert to PDF because the recipient may not have LibreOffice, many portals and forms accept PDF only, and a PDF looks and prints the same on every device.

How to convert ODT to PDF with our free browser tool

The free ODT to PDF tool is the quickest route on a computer without LibreOffice, a locked-down work laptop or a phone. It reads the document in your browser and keeps headings, tables, images and footnotes.

  1. Open the tool page in any modern browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari).
  2. Drag your .odt file onto the drop area, or click to choose it.
  3. Check the preview. Headings, lists, tables, images and footnotes should all be in place.
  4. Download the PDF.
  5. If you need text that can be selected, copied and searched, use the print view and choose “Save as PDF” as the printer in your browser’s print dialog.

The tool only accepts ODT files and checks the file signature, so a renamed file of another type is rejected.

Why does it matter that the file is never uploaded?

Most online converters send your document to their server and back. That is fine for a flyer, not for a contract, a CV with your home address or a medical letter.

Our converter works differently. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, so the ODT file is never uploaded and nothing is stored. There is no copy on a third-party server to leak or be retained. We handle client lead lists and PDF reports daily and follow the same rule: if a file does not need to leave the computer, it should not.

A worked example from our own workflow

A client sent a 6-page campaign brief written in LibreOffice, with two tables of target job titles, a logo and footnotes. The laptop we were on had no office suite. We dropped the file into the converter, checked the tables and footnotes, then used the print view to save a PDF with selectable text so the job titles could be copied into our search filters. The PDF was over the project portal’s limit, so we ran it through the PDF compressor. The brief never left the laptop.

How do you export ODT to PDF in LibreOffice?

LibreOffice is the native home of ODT files, so it gives the most faithful result. It is free for Windows, macOS and Linux from the official LibreOffice download page.

  1. Open the .odt file in LibreOffice Writer.
  2. Go to File > Export as PDF.
  3. Choose your options in the PDF Options dialog (see below).
  4. Click Export, pick a folder and a file name, and save.

If you do not need any options, File > Export As > Export Directly as PDF skips the dialog and uses your last settings. There is also a PDF button on the standard toolbar that does the same.

Which LibreOffice PDF options are worth changing?

The General tab holds the settings most people need:

  • Range: all pages, a range such as 2-5, or the selection.
  • Images: lossless for best quality, or JPEG with a quality slider for smaller files. “Reduce image resolution” caps the DPI.
  • Archive (PDF/A): a PDF/A file for long-term storage.
  • Universal accessibility (PDF/UA) and Tagged PDF: structure that screen readers can follow.
  • Export outlines: turns headings into PDF bookmarks.
  • Hybrid PDF (embed ODF file): stores the ODT inside the PDF so you can edit it in LibreOffice later.
  • Comments: export them as PDF annotations or in the margin.

Other tabs set the initial view, passwords and permissions (Security) and certificate signing (Digital Signatures).

Which settings should you use for each purpose?

Purpose Image setting Resolution cap Other options
Professional printing Lossless 300 DPI or off Tagged PDF, outlines
Email or screen reading JPEG, quality 80-90% 150 DPI Outlines for long files
Upload portal with a size limit (often 300 KB to 2 MB) JPEG, quality 60-75% 150 DPI or lower Compress afterwards if still too big
Long-term archive Lossless 300 DPI PDF/A
File you may edit again Lossless Off Hybrid PDF

If the PDF still goes over a portal limit, our compress PDF to 300KB tool also targets sizes from 50 KB up to 2 MB.

How to change ODT to PDF with Google Docs

Google Drive has supported ODF files since Google added full ODF support in 2014, so any computer with a browser and a Google account can do the job.

  1. Go to Google Drive and click New > File upload, then choose the .odt file.
  2. Right-click the uploaded file and choose Open with > Google Docs. Docs converts it into a Google document.
  3. Check the layout, especially tables, text boxes and page breaks.
  4. Go to File > Download > PDF Document (.pdf).

The catch: this method uploads your document to Google, and the conversion can shift text boxes, frames, unusual fonts and columns. For a simple letter it works well.

Can Microsoft Word convert an ODT file to PDF?

Yes. Current versions of Word open ODT files directly, and Word can save any open document as a PDF.

  1. In Word, go to File > Open and choose the .odt file.
  2. Review every page. Word converts the formatting into its own, so the layout may shift: spacing, list numbering, tables and page breaks are the most common changes.
  3. Fix anything that moved.
  4. On Windows, use File > Save As and choose PDF as the file type, or File > Export > Create PDF/XPS. On a Mac, use File > Save As and pick PDF as the file format.

Word suits mostly-text documents. For a carefully designed layout, export from LibreOffice or our tool instead.

How to convert ODT to PDF on Windows 10 and Windows 11

Windows has no full ODT viewer built in, so you have three practical routes:

  • Our browser tool: open it in Edge or Chrome and convert without installing anything.
  • LibreOffice or Word: use the steps above if either is installed.
  • WordPad plus Microsoft Print to PDF (Windows 10): WordPad opens basic ODT files; press Ctrl+P and choose Microsoft Print to PDF. Expect lost formatting. WordPad is gone from recent Windows 11 releases.

How to convert ODT to PDF on a Mac

On macOS you can use LibreOffice for Mac, Word for Mac or our browser tool in Safari or Chrome. For a very simple document there is also TextEdit:

  1. Right-click the .odt file and choose Open With > TextEdit.
  2. Go to File > Export as PDF and save.

TextEdit often drops headers, footers, footnotes and complex tables, so keep it for short letters.

How to convert ODT to PDF on iPhone and Android

Phones rarely open ODT out of the box, but you usually do not need a converter app.

  • Our browser tool: open it in Safari or Chrome, pick the file from Files (iPhone) or Downloads (Android), and save the PDF. Nothing is uploaded.
  • Google Docs on the web: upload the file to Drive, open it in Google Docs, and download or share it as a PDF.
  • An office app: a LibreOffice-based app such as Collabora Office, available for Android and iOS, can open ODT and export a PDF.

If you do install an app, note that a converter never needs your contacts, location or photos.

How to convert ODT to PDF from the command line

For dozens or hundreds of files, LibreOffice converts without opening a window. The command is the same on Linux, macOS and Windows; only the program path changes.

Convert one file:

soffice --headless --convert-to pdf report.odt

Convert every ODT file in a folder and put the PDFs in a separate folder:

soffice --headless --convert-to pdf --outdir ./pdf *.odt

What each part does:

  • –headless runs LibreOffice with no user interface.
  • –convert-to pdf sets the output format (the Writer PDF filter is picked automatically).
  • –outdir sets the destination folder; otherwise PDFs land in the current folder.

Where to find the program:

System Command or path
Linux soffice or libreoffice (both are usually on the PATH)
macOS /Applications/LibreOffice.app/Contents/MacOS/soffice
Windows "C:\Program Files\LibreOffice\program\soffice.exe"

If the wildcard does not work in your Windows shell, loop instead: for %f in (*.odt) do "C:\Program Files\LibreOffice\program\soffice.exe" --headless --convert-to pdf --outdir pdf "%f".

A common gotcha: if LibreOffice is already open, the headless command may quit without converting anything, because both share the same user profile. Close LibreOffice first, or give the command its own profile with -env:UserInstallation=file:///tmp/lo-convert. The full list of switches is in the LibreOffice start parameters help page.

Which ODT to PDF method should you choose?

Method Cost Upload needed? Layout accuracy Best for
LeadCanal browser tool Free No, runs locally High for headings, tables, images, footnotes Quick, private conversions on any device
LibreOffice Export as PDF Free No Highest (native format) Exact layout, PDF/A, bookmarks, passwords
Google Docs Free Yes, to Google Drive Good for simple documents Any browser, shared documents
Microsoft Word Paid licence No (desktop app) Medium, layout may shift Word users editing before export
TextEdit or WordPad Free, built in No Low Short plain letters only
LibreOffice command line Free No Highest Batch converting many files

Why does my PDF look different from the ODT file?

Most problems come down to fonts, unsupported objects or overlooked settings. Here are the fixes.

The fonts changed or the text reflowed

ODT files do not embed their fonts by default. If the converting computer lacks a font, it substitutes one with different widths, and lines, page breaks and tables move. Fixes:

  • Install the missing fonts, or convert on the computer that created the document.
  • In LibreOffice, open File > Properties > Font and tick the option to embed fonts in the document before sending the ODT to someone else.
  • Stick to widely available fonts for documents that travel between systems.

Tracked changes or comments show up in the PDF

Accept or reject changes first (Edit > Track Changes in LibreOffice), and untick comments in the PDF options if you do not want them exported.

Images look blurry or the file is huge

Blurry images mean the JPEG quality or DPI cap is too low; a huge file usually means lossless photos. Use the settings table above, then compress if needed.

The text in the PDF cannot be selected or searched

Some converters output each page as a picture. In our tool, use the print view and save as PDF from the browser’s print dialog to get real, selectable text. LibreOffice exports always keep the text selectable.

The file will not open or the converter rejects it

  • Check the extension. A .ott file is a template and a .fodt file is a flat XML version; open either in LibreOffice and save as a normal .odt first.
  • Password-protected ODT files must be opened with the password in LibreOffice before export.

The PDF needs to be printed in black and white

Colour charts can waste ink or print as muddy grey. Run the file through our color PDF to black and white converter to get a clean greyscale copy.

If the document is inside an email, our EML to PDF converter turns the saved message and its attachments into a PDF the same private way. Every converter we built is on the LeadCanal free tools page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert ODT to PDF for free?

Use our browser-based ODT converter, LibreOffice’s File > Export as PDF, or Google Docs. All three are free, and the first two keep the file on your own device.

Does converting ODT to PDF keep the formatting?

LibreOffice keeps it exactly, because ODT is its native format. Browser tools keep headings, tables, images and footnotes. Word and Google Docs may move spacing, tables and page breaks, so check the result.

How do I convert many ODT files to PDF at once?

Install LibreOffice and run soffice --headless --convert-to pdf --outdir pdf *.odt in the folder with your files. Close any open LibreOffice window first.

Is it safe to use an online ODT to PDF converter?

Server-based converters receive a copy of your document. A browser-based converter like ours never uploads it, which is safer for contracts, CVs and personal letters.

What is the difference between ODT and DOCX?

Both are ZIP-based formats. ODT is the OpenDocument standard used by LibreOffice; DOCX is Microsoft’s format for Word. Each reads the other, but layouts can differ.

How do I make a PDF/A from an ODT file?

In LibreOffice, choose File > Export as PDF and tick the Archive (PDF/A) option on the General tab before exporting.

Conclusion: key takeaways

Match the method to the job: a private browser tool for speed, LibreOffice for exact layout, the command line for volume.

  • For a fast, private conversion on any device, use a browser tool that never uploads the file.
  • LibreOffice File > Export as PDF gives the most exact layout, plus PDF/A and bookmarks.
  • Google Docs and Word can convert ODT files but may shift tables and page breaks.
  • Batch convert folders with soffice –headless –convert-to pdf and close LibreOffice first.
  • Most layout problems come from missing fonts, so install or embed them before converting.
