To learn how to crop a picture into a circle, remember one rule: a circle crop is a square crop with the corners masked away. Pick a square area, keep the subject in the middle, and save as PNG so the corners stay transparent. The fastest free way is our PFP cropper: open the photo, drag it under the circle guide and download a round PNG in seconds, with nothing uploaded.

Below you will find the browser method first, then the steps for iPhone, Android, Word, PowerPoint, Google Slides, Canva, Photoshop and GIMP, plus sizes, fixes for ovals and blurry results, and matching pairs.

Quick answer: Make the crop square first, then apply a circle mask and export a PNG.

  • Fastest: Try the free PFP cropper, choose Circle, position the photo and download a transparent PNG.
  • Office apps: in Word or PowerPoint use Crop to Shape, pick the oval, then set Aspect Ratio to 1:1.
  • Google Slides and Canva: use a circle mask or a circle frame, then drag the edges or the photo until it is round.
  • Phones: iPhone Photos and Google Photos crop to a square but not a circle, so finish in a browser tool.
  • Avoid ovals: a circle only comes from a 1:1 crop. Any other ratio gives an ellipse.

How to crop a picture into a circle?

Every method on this page does the same three things, whatever the app calls them.

  1. Make a square selection. A circle fits inside a square, so the crop must be 1:1. This is the step most people skip, and it is why their circle comes out as an oval.
  2. Mask everything outside the circle. The app hides or deletes the four corners.
  3. Save in a format that keeps transparency. PNG keeps the corners transparent; JPG cannot, so it fills them with a solid colour, usually white.

If you only need the circle to look round on a website or social profile, you can often upload a plain square. Discord, Instagram, X, LinkedIn and YouTube all apply their own circle mask. A true round file matters for slides, email signatures, stickers, team pages and anything you place on a coloured background.

Method 1: crop a circle in your browser with the free PFP cropper

We built the circle profile picture maker because we crop headshots for client one-pagers, team pages and email signatures every week, and opening a design app for each one was slow. It runs entirely in your browser.

  1. Choose a photo. JPG, PNG, WEBP, GIF, BMP and AVIF are accepted. You can drag the file in or pick it from your phone.
  2. Keep Shape on Circle. Square and Rounded square are there too if a platform or design needs them.
  3. Position the photo. Drag it under the circle guide. Zoom with the slider, the mouse wheel or a pinch, and use Rotate if the photo is sideways. Arrow keys nudge it, and Shift plus an arrow moves it further.
  4. Check the live previews. The tool shows your crop at 96, 48 and 32 pixels, which is how small most profile pictures really appear.
  5. Pick a size. Presets include 1024 x 1024 (sharpest, works anywhere), 512 for Discord and Slack, 400 for X and LinkedIn, 320 for Instagram, 800 for YouTube, 720 for Facebook, 200 for TikTok and 2048 for print.
  6. Pick a format and download. PNG gives transparent corners. JPG fills the corners with a colour you choose, which suits places that turn transparency black.

Need two halves of one image for you and a friend? Set Mode to Matching pair. The crop area becomes two circles side by side, and you get a left and a right file in one ZIP. Our guide to the right Discord PFP size covers how those pairs display on Discord.

How do you circle crop on iPhone or Android?

Most people asking how to crop a picture into a circle are on a phone. Neither the iPhone Photos app nor Google Photos has a circle crop. Both can crop to a square, which is half the job.

  • iPhone and iPad: open the photo in Safari’s file picker on the online circle cropper and pinch to zoom. Photos picked from the library are usually shared as JPG. If you get a HEIC error, switch Settings, Camera, Formats to Most Compatible for future shots, or share the photo as JPG first.
  • Android: open the same page in Chrome, tap Choose a photo and pick from Gallery or Files. Pinch and drag work the same way as on a computer.
  • Google Slides app: tap the image, tap Crop, then the Mask icon and choose Circle. This only changes how the image looks in the slide.

Shooting in RAW on an iPhone or a camera? Convert the file with our DNG to JPG converter first, then crop the JPG.

How do you crop an image into a circle in Word and PowerPoint?

Microsoft Office calls this “crop to shape”. The steps are the same in Word and PowerPoint on Windows and Mac, as described in Microsoft’s crop to shape guide.

  1. Insert the picture and select it.
  2. Open the Picture Format tab and click the arrow under Crop.
  3. Choose Crop to Shape and pick the oval.
  4. Open Crop again, choose Aspect Ratio and select 1:1. This turns the oval into a perfect circle.
  5. Drag the picture inside the frame to centre the face, then click outside to finish.

To get a separate image file, right-click the cropped picture and choose Save as Picture, then save it as PNG. If that option is missing in your version, use the browser tool instead.

How do you make a circle image in Google Slides or Docs?

Google calls it masking. Google’s crop and adjust images help page covers the basics.

  1. In Slides, insert the image and select it.
  2. Click the arrow next to the Crop icon (Mask image), choose Shapes, then the circle.
  3. A wide photo becomes an oval. Double-click it and drag the black side handles, not the corners, until it is round. Squaring the image before masking is quicker.
  4. Press Enter to finish.

Google Docs has no direct shape crop. Use Insert, Drawing, New, add the image inside the drawing, mask it to a circle there, then Save and close. This works on a computer, not in the Docs mobile app.

How do you circle crop in Canva?

  1. Open a design, go to Elements and search for “circle frame”.
  2. Add the frame, then drag your uploaded photo onto it. It snaps inside.
  3. Double-click the photo to move or resize it inside the frame.
  4. Download as PNG. A transparent background is a Canva Pro feature; on the free plan the corners keep the page colour.

How do you crop a circle in Photoshop, GIMP or Mac Preview?

  • Photoshop: choose the Elliptical Marquee tool, hold Shift while you drag to get a circle, then add a layer mask. Crop the canvas to the circle and export as PNG.
  • GIMP: use the Ellipse Select tool with Shift held or Fixed Aspect ratio set to 1:1. Add an alpha channel, invert the selection, delete, crop to content and export as PNG.
  • Mac Preview: the Markup toolbar has an elliptical selection tool. Results vary by macOS version, so save as PNG and check the corners before you use the file.

What size should a round profile picture be?

Always export a square, because the circle is drawn inside it. These are the upload sizes we use and build into the tool presets.

Platform Recommended upload Shown as
Discord At least 128 x 128, 512 x 512 stays sharp Circle
Instagram 320 x 320 Circle
X (Twitter) 400 x 400 Circle
LinkedIn 400 x 400 Circle
YouTube 800 x 800 Circle
TikTok At least 200 x 200 Circle
Slack 512 x 512 to 1024 x 1024 Rounded square
Email signature or slide 2 to 3 times the display size Your choice

If you are unsure, 1024 x 1024 works almost everywhere and the platform scales it down.

Worked example: round headshots for a team one-pager

Here is how we handle a typical request: five team headshots, all different shapes, needed as matching round photos for a PDF one-pager.

  1. We open each photo in the free PFP cropper, keep Circle and PNG, and zoom until the head and top of the shoulders fill about two thirds of the circle.
  2. We check the 48 pixel preview. If the face is hard to read at that size, we zoom in a little more.
  3. We export every headshot at the same preset, 1024, so they line up evenly in the layout.
  4. The finished pages go through our JPG to PDF combiner, and if the file is too heavy to email we shrink it with the PDF compressor.

Using the same zoom and size for every photo is what makes a set look consistent, more than any filter.

Why is my circle crop an oval, blurry or white in the corners?

  • It is an oval: the crop was not 1:1. Set the aspect ratio to 1:1 in Office, drag the mask sides in Google Slides, or use a tool that only allows square crops.
  • White or black corners: the file was saved as JPG, or the app flattened the transparency. Export as PNG. If a site shows transparent corners as black, export JPG with a matching fill colour instead.
  • It looks blurry: the source photo is small or you zoomed in too far. Start from the original photo, not a screenshot, and export at 1024 x 1024.
  • The face is cut off: circles lose the corners, so keep the face centred with some space above the head.
  • HEIC will not open: some browsers cannot read HEIC. Share the photo as JPG or change the camera format to Most Compatible.
  • The platform crops it again: that is normal. Upload a square and centre the subject so the platform’s circle matches yours.

Is it safe to crop photos with an online tool?

Many “free online” croppers upload your photo to their server. For selfies, ID-style headshots and pictures of children, that is worth avoiding. Our cropper does the work inside your browser on your own device: the photo is never uploaded to LeadCanal and nothing is stored. Close the tab and it is gone. The tool also only opens image files and checks each file’s first bytes, so a renamed file of another type is refused.

Frequently asked questions

How to crop a picture into a circle for free?

Use a free browser tool such as the LeadCanal PFP cropper, which needs no account. Google Slides, GIMP and Canva’s free plan can also do it.

Can you crop a picture into a circle on iPhone?

Not in the Photos app, which only offers square and other rectangle ratios. Open a browser-based circle cropper in Safari and pick the photo from your library.

How do I make a perfect circle instead of an oval?

Make the crop square first. In Word and PowerPoint, set Aspect Ratio to 1:1 after choosing the oval shape.

How do I keep the background transparent?

Save as PNG. JPG does not support transparency, so the corners turn white or another solid colour.

What size should a circle profile picture be?

Upload a square of at least 400 x 400 pixels for most social sites. 1024 x 1024 is a safe choice everywhere.

How do I make matching circle PFPs from one picture?

Choose Matching pair in the PFP cropper, line the image up under both circles and download the left and right files.

Does cropping into a circle reduce quality?

Cropping removes pixels outside the circle but does not blur what remains, unless you zoom in a lot or export smaller than the original.

Conclusion: key takeaways
