To open a VCF file, double-click or tap it and your device hands it to its contacts app: Contacts on a Mac or iPhone, Google Contacts or Samsung Contacts on Android, and Outlook or Notepad on Windows. That imports the cards. If you only want to read the names, emails and phone numbers, or get them into Excel, drop the file into our free VCF to CSV converter. It shows every contact in a table and gives you a spreadsheet, without uploading the file anywhere.

Below we cover how to open a VCF file on each platform, view one without importing it, open it in Excel, and fix files that will not open.

Quick answer: A VCF file is a plain-text vCard, a digital business card that can hold one contact or thousands.

  • Fastest way to read it: open the free VCF viewer and converter in your browser, drop the file in and see every contact as a row.
  • Windows: right-click, Open with, Notepad to read it, or import it into Outlook.
  • Mac: select it in Finder and press Space for a Quick Look preview, or double-click to import into Contacts.
  • iPhone and Android: tap it in Mail, Messages or Files to see the card, then choose to add it.
  • Excel: Excel cannot read vCard directly, so convert it to CSV first.

What is a VCF file?

A VCF file (extension .vcf, sometimes .vcard) is a vCard: a standard text format for contact details. Every contact starts with BEGIN:VCARD and ends with END:VCARD, with one field per line in between, such as FN for the full name, EMAIL, TEL, ORG and ADR. The current version, vCard 4.0, is defined in RFC 6350, but phones and email apps still export versions 2.1 and 3.0 as well.

You usually get one in three ways:

  • A shared contact: someone taps “Share contact” on their phone and it arrives as a .vcf attachment.
  • An address book export: iCloud, Google Contacts, Android and Outlook all export contacts as vCard, often as one file holding every contact.
  • An email signature or website card: a “Save to contacts” button often downloads a .vcf.

One catch: the same extension is also used for the Variant Call Format in genomics. If your file is huge and starts with ##fileformat=VCFv4 instead of BEGIN:VCARD, it is DNA variant data, not contacts. That kind is opened with bioinformatics tools such as bcftools or IGV, and nothing in this guide applies to it.

How to open a VCF file without importing it

Double-clicking a VCF on most devices does not just show it. It starts an import, and a file with hundreds of contacts can flood your address book with duplicates. When we receive contact exports from clients, we always look before we import. These are the safe ways to read a vCard first:

  1. Use a browser viewer that does not upload. Our VCF to CSV tool lists every contact in a preview table with name, company, emails, phones and address in separate columns. It runs on your own device, so works on Windows, Mac, Chromebook, iPhone and Android.
  2. Open it as text. Notepad on Windows or TextEdit on a Mac shows the raw vCard.
  3. Use Quick Look on a Mac. Select the file in Finder and press Space to preview the card without saving it.
  4. Preview it on iPhone. Tap the attachment in Mail or Messages. iOS shows the card first and only adds it when you tap to create or add the contacts.

How to open a VCF file on Windows

Windows does not have one built-in contacts viewer that every PC uses, so what happens on double-click depends on your default app. Pick the method that matches what you want:

  • Just read it: right-click the file, choose Open with, then Notepad.
  • Import into classic Outlook: go to File, Open & Export, Import/Export, and choose Import a VCARD file (.vcf). Classic Outlook is known for importing only the first contact from a file that holds many, which is the most common Windows complaint we hear.
  • Import many contacts into Outlook: convert the vCard to CSV with the Outlook layout, then import that CSV. Every contact comes across, not just the first.
  • See it as a spreadsheet: convert to CSV and open it in Excel (steps below).

How to open a VCF file on a Mac

On macOS the Contacts app owns .vcf files. Double-click the file and Contacts asks whether you want to import the cards, and it warns you about duplicates it finds. To read without importing, press Space in Finder for Quick Look, or right-click and open it with TextEdit. If you want the contacts in Numbers or Excel instead, convert the file to CSV first.

How do you open a VCF file on iPhone or iPad?

On an iPhone, open the attachment from Mail or Messages and you see the contact card. For a file with several contacts, iOS offers to add all of them at once. Files saved to the Files app open the same preview when tapped, and you can share them to Contacts from there.

If you want to move a whole vCard into your iCloud address book, open icloud.com/contacts on a computer and use the import option for vCards. To go the other way and get iPhone contacts into a spreadsheet, export them as a vCard from iCloud and convert that file to CSV, as shown in the Excel section below.

How do you open a VCF file on Android?

Tap the file in your Files or Downloads app and Android offers to open it with a contacts app, which then asks where to save the contacts. In the Google Contacts app you can also import from a file directly. On Samsung phones, the Contacts app has its own import option under managing contacts. Menu names vary by brand, so look for “Import” in the contacts app settings.

On a computer, Google Contacts accepts both vCard and CSV files through its Import button. Google explains the process in its import contacts help page.

How to open a VCF file in Excel

Excel has no vCard import. If you open a .vcf in Excel you get one long column of lines like TEL;TYPE=CELL:+1..., not a table. The fix is to convert it to CSV, where each contact is a row and each field is a column. Here is how we do it:

  1. Open the free VCF to CSV converter on LeadCanal.
  2. Drop in your .vcf file. One file with many contacts works, and so do many single-contact files at once. You can also paste vCard text that starts with BEGIN:VCARD.
  3. Under Options, keep the CSV layout on Standard (Excel, CRM import). Leave “Excel friendly” ticked so accents, non-Latin names and emoji display correctly.
  4. Click Convert to CSV, check the preview table and the count of contacts with an email and a phone, then download.
  5. Double-click the CSV and it opens in Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets with proper columns.

The Standard layout gives you these columns: Full Name, First, Middle and Last Name, Company, Job Title, Email 1 to 3, Mobile, Work, Home and Other Phone, Street, City, State, Postal Code, Country, Website, Birthday and Notes. Contact photos are skipped on purpose to keep the spreadsheet readable.

Need to edit the list and send it back to a phone? Make your changes in Excel, save as CSV and turn it back into a vCard with our CSV to VCF converter.

Which way of opening a VCF file should you use?

Method Cost Imports contacts? Shows all contacts? Best for
LeadCanal VCF to CSV (browser) Free No Yes, as a table Reading, checking and getting contacts into Excel on any device
Notepad or TextEdit Free No Yes, as raw text A quick look at one or two cards
Mac Quick Look Free No Yes, as cards Previewing before importing on macOS
Apple Contacts or iPhone Free Yes Yes Adding contacts to iCloud
Google Contacts Free Yes Yes Adding contacts to Gmail and Android
Classic Outlook import Included with Outlook Yes Often only the first Single shared contacts

Why won’t my VCF file open, and how do you fix it?

These are the problems we run into most when clients send us contact exports:

  • Only one contact shows up. The file holds many cards, but the app imports the first. Convert it to CSV to see every row, then import the CSV instead.
  • Names look like “é” or question marks. This is an encoding problem, common with vCard 2.1 files from older phones that use quoted-printable text. Our converter decodes those, and the Excel friendly option keeps the characters intact in Excel.
  • The phone says the format is not supported. The file may be damaged, renamed, or not a vCard at all. Open it in a text editor and check that it starts with BEGIN:VCARD.
  • Excel shows a single column of text. You opened the .vcf directly. Convert it to CSV first.
  • Contacts import twice. Preview before importing, and use the merge or duplicate tools in Google Contacts or Apple Contacts afterwards.
  • The file is huge and full of odd codes. It holds embedded photos or is a genomics VCF. The first line tells you which.

Is it safe to open a VCF file?

A vCard is plain text, so it is not a program. Still, treat attachments from strangers with care. Contact cards can carry links, and security researchers have reported flaws in how some contact apps handled crafted vCard files over the years. Keep your system updated, and if you do not know the sender, read the file as text or in a browser viewer before you import anything.

Privacy matters too. An address book export holds other people’s personal details: phone numbers, home addresses, birthdays and notes. Our converter runs entirely in your browser. The file is never uploaded to LeadCanal or anyone else, and nothing is stored once you close the tab. It also checks the file type and refuses anything that is not a vCard.

A worked example: checking a client’s contact export

A typical job for us: a client exports their iPhone contacts from iCloud as a single contacts.vcf and asks us to clean it up for their CRM. Double-clicking it would push every card into our own address book, so we never do that.

  1. We drop contacts.vcf into the VCF to CSV converter with the Standard layout.
  2. The summary line tells us how many contacts it found and how many have an email and a phone, so we know straight away how much of the list is usable.
  3. We download the CSV and open it in Excel. Personal entries and duplicates get removed.
  4. We pull loose addresses out of the Notes column with the email extractor, then check every address with the email verifier before anything goes near a campaign.
  5. If the list is too big for the CRM’s import limit, we cut it into parts with the CSV splitter.

The client’s contacts never leave the laptop. If your file is a plain text list rather than a vCard, our guide on how to convert TXT to CSV covers that case.

Frequently asked questions

What program opens a VCF file?

Apple Contacts, Google Contacts, Outlook, Samsung Contacts and any text editor can open one. To read it as a table, use a browser-based VCF viewer or converter.

How to open a VCF file without adding it to contacts?

Open it in Notepad or TextEdit, use Quick Look on a Mac, or drop it into a browser converter that shows a preview table without importing.

Can I open a VCF file in Excel?

Not directly. Convert it to CSV first, then open the CSV in Excel so each contact becomes a row.

Can I open a VCF file in Google Sheets?

Yes, after converting it to CSV. In Google Sheets, use File, Import and upload the CSV.

Why does my VCF only show one contact?

Some apps, classic Outlook in particular, import only the first card from a multi-contact file. Convert it to CSV and import that instead.

How many contacts can one VCF file hold?

The format has no fixed limit. A full address book export can hold thousands of contacts in one file.

Can I open a VCF file on a Chromebook?

Yes. Import it into Google Contacts in the browser, or use a browser-based converter to view it without importing.

Are contact photos kept when I convert a VCF to CSV?

No. Photos are skipped in our converter to keep the CSV small and readable. Names, emails, phones, addresses and notes are kept.

Conclusion: key takeaways

Opening a vCard is easy. Keeping your address book clean takes one extra step: look first, then import.

  • A VCF file is a plain-text vCard that can hold one contact or a whole address book.
  • Double-clicking usually imports, so preview first if the file is large or unfamiliar.
  • Read it as a table in a browser converter, or as raw text in Notepad or TextEdit.
  • Excel cannot read vCard, so convert the VCF to CSV and open that instead.
  • If only one contact imports, convert to CSV and import the CSV.
  • Keep address books private by using a converter that never uploads the file.
