The safest Discord PFP size is a square image of at least 512 x 512 pixels, cropped so your face or logo sits in the middle. Discord shows avatars as a small circle, and 128 x 128 pixels is the widely documented minimum, but a larger square stays sharp when Discord scales it down. The fastest way to get it right is our free PFP cropper: pick the Discord preset, centre the subject in the circle guide and download a ready-made square.
Below: the sizes we could verify for Discord and other big platforms, how to crop a profile picture into a circle on phone or desktop, matching PFPs, and blurry avatar fixes.
Quick answer: Upload a square, high-resolution image and let the platform do the final scaling.
- Discord: square, 512 x 512 px or larger (128 x 128 px is the commonly cited minimum). PNG and GIF are supported; animated GIF avatars need Nitro.
- Other platforms: X recommends 400 x 400 px, Slack wants 512 to 1024 px, and YouTube shows your picture at 98 x 98 px.
- Circle crops: keep the face inside the middle of the square, because the corners get cut off.
- Fastest method: crop in a browser tool with platform presets, such as the LeadCanal circle PFP maker, so nothing is uploaded.
- Sizes change: platforms update their specs, so upload larger than the minimum.

What is the Discord PFP size?
Discord’s help centre does not list a pixel requirement for avatars. It says PNG and GIF are supported and that animated GIF avatars are a Nitro feature. The 128 x 128 pixel minimum and 1:1 ratio quoted everywhere come from widely documented guidance, not an official spec page.
Here is the Discord PFP size setup we use when we prepare avatars:
- Shape: a perfect square (1:1). Discord masks it into a circle.
- Size: 512 x 512 pixels as a sensible default, 1024 x 1024 if the source photo is large. Never go below 128 x 128.
- Format: PNG for logos, art and anything with text; JPG works for photos; GIF only if you have Nitro and want animation.
- Banner: Discord’s own help page says profile banners must be at least 680 x 240 pixels and under 10MB, and only Nitro members can upload one.
Why go bigger than 128? Discord shows your avatar at several sizes and on high-density screens, so a larger source gives it more pixels to scale down from. That is why a 512 px square looks crisp while a 128 px one can look soft.
Profile picture sizes for every major platform
We only list figures we could check against an official help page or that are widely documented across platform guides. Platforms change these numbers without notice, so treat them as a floor and upload a larger square where you can.
| Platform | Size to upload | What is confirmed | Shape on screen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discord avatar | 512 x 512 px (min 128 x 128) | PNG and GIF supported; animated avatars need Nitro (Discord help) | Circle |
| Discord banner | At least 680 x 240 px | PNG, JPG or animated GIF under 10MB, Nitro only (Discord help) | Rectangle |
| X (Twitter) | 400 x 400 px | 400 x 400 recommended, 2MB max, JPEG, GIF or PNG (X help) | Circle |
| YouTube | 800 x 800 px | Renders at 98 x 98 px, up to 15MB, JPG, GIF, BMP or PNG, no animated GIFs (YouTube help) | Circle |
| Slack | 512 to 1024 px | Minimum 512 x 512, no larger than 1024 x 1024 (Slack help) | Rounded square |
| 320 x 320 px or larger | 320 x 320 is the widely documented size; shown much smaller | Circle | |
| 400 x 400 px or larger | 400 x 400 is the widely documented recommendation | Circle | |
| 720 x 720 px | Widely documented minimum is 320 x 320; larger stays sharper | Circle | |
| TikTok | 200 x 200 px or larger | 200 x 200 is the widely documented size; JPG or PNG | Circle |
| Microsoft Teams | Square, 512 px or larger | We could not confirm an official pixel figure | Circle |

Tip: make one 1024 x 1024 master crop first. Every platform here accepts a square, so one good master covers almost everything.
How do you crop a profile picture into a circle?
Almost every platform crops to a circle for you, so what you really need is a well-framed square. Pick whichever method fits the device you are on.
Method 1: Our free browser cropper (any device)
We built the LeadCanal profile picture cropper after resizing the same headshots for platform after platform. It runs entirely in your browser.
- Open the tool and choose your photo. It only accepts image files and checks the file before loading it.
- Pick a shape: circle, square or rounded square.
- Choose a preset: 1024 (any platform), Discord 512, Instagram 320, X and LinkedIn 400, YouTube 800, Facebook 720, TikTok 200, or Slack and Teams 256.
- Line the face up inside the circle guide, leaving a little space above the head.
- Download the result. Choose a transparent PNG if you want a ready-made circle with see-through corners.
For Slack, pick the Discord 512 or the 1024 preset instead of 256, because Slack’s help page asks for at least 512 x 512 pixels.
Method 2: iPhone
- Open the photo in the Photos app and tap Edit.
- Tap the crop tool, then the aspect ratio button, and choose Square.
- Drag the photo so the face sits in the centre of the square, then tap Done.
You get a square, not a circle, which is fine because the platform applies the circle mask.
Method 3: Android
In Google Photos, open the image, tap Edit, go to Crop and pick the square aspect ratio. Samsung Gallery and other phone gallery apps have a similar crop tool with a 1:1 option. Menu names vary by phone and app version, so look for “Crop” and “1:1” or “Square”.
Method 4: Windows and Mac
On Windows, open the photo in the Photos app, edit it, choose Crop and set the aspect ratio to Square, then save a copy. On a Mac, drag a selection in Preview while holding Shift to keep it square, then choose Tools and Crop.
Method 5: Inside the platform
Discord, X and LinkedIn show a crop window after you pick an image, with less control and one size. To upload and crop a Discord avatar on desktop, open User Settings, go to Profiles, select Change Avatar, upload, adjust the crop, apply and save.
Which cropping method should you use?
| Method | Cost | Upload needed? | Circle or transparent PNG? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LeadCanal PFP cropper | Free | No, runs in the browser | Yes | Platform presets, matching pairs, circle PNGs |
| iPhone Photos | Free | No | Square only | Quick crops straight from the camera roll |
| Google Photos / Android gallery | Free | Not for the crop itself | Square only | Android users |
| Windows Photos | Free | No | Square only | Desktop crops on Windows |
| Mac Preview or Photos | Free | No | Square only | Desktop crops on Mac |
| Platform’s own cropper | Free | Yes, to that platform | Circle preview only | A one-off change on one site |
How do you keep a face centred in a circle crop?
A circle drawn inside a square covers about 78.5% of it (pi divided by 4). In other words, roughly a fifth of your square disappears in the corners. Anything you place there, such as text, a hand or the top of a hairstyle, may be cut off.
- Frame head and shoulders. The face should fill about half to two thirds of the square’s height.
- Put the eyes slightly above the middle. This looks natural and leaves room for the chin.
- Leave headroom. A small gap above the hair stops the circle from slicing the top of the head.
- Keep text and logos away from the edge. Server icons and brand marks should sit well inside the circle.
- Check at tiny size. Zoom out until the preview is thumbnail size. If you cannot tell who it is, crop tighter.
How do you make matching PFPs?
Matching PFPs are profile pictures designed to go together, often for friends, couples or a team. There are two common ways to make them.
- Split one image. Take a wide picture with two characters or people and crop the left and right sides into separate squares. Each person uses one half.
- Match two separate images. Use two photos or artworks with the same zoom level, background colour, border and pose direction, so they look like a set when they appear side by side.
The pair mode in the LeadCanal matching PFP cropper keeps both crops at the same size and shape, which is the part people usually get wrong by hand. A few tips we follow:
- Export both images at the same preset, so one does not look sharper than the other.
- Have the subjects face each other: the left image looking right, the right image looking left.
- On Discord, a matching banner (Nitro only) can extend the theme to your profile card.
Why is my profile picture blurry, and how do you fix it?
Blurry avatars nearly always come from too few pixels or too much compression. Here are the common causes and fixes.
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Soft or pixelated avatar | Source smaller than the display size, then stretched | Start from the original photo and export at 512 px or larger |
| Blocky edges around text | JPG compression on a graphic | Export logos and art as PNG |
| Muddy photo after sending | Image was forwarded through a chat app that compresses it | Use the original file from the camera roll, not a forwarded copy |
| Grainy colours on an animated avatar | GIF supports only 256 colours per frame | Use a still PNG, or simplify the colours in the GIF |
| Head cut off | Face placed near the edge of a circle crop | Re-crop with the face centred and some headroom |
| Upload rejected | File too large or wrong format, such as a RAW photo | Convert to JPG or PNG and check the platform’s file limit |
| Old picture still showing | Platform or app cache | Wait a few minutes and restart the app; YouTube notes updates can take a few minutes |
If your best photo is an iPhone ProRAW or camera RAW file, most platforms will not accept it. Convert it first with our DNG to JPG converter, then crop the JPG.
Does it matter where you crop your photo?
It does if the photo is personal. A profile picture is often a face or a family photo, and many free online editors upload the file to their server first. You rarely know how long they keep it.
Our cropper processes the image in your browser, so the file is never uploaded to us and nothing is stored after you close the tab. We built all our converters that way because we handle client files every day, from CSV lead lists to VCF contact exports, and we apply the same rule to images: the file should only go where you choose to send it.
A worked example: one photo, five platforms
When we set up sender profiles for a client’s outreach, each sender needs the same photo on their mailbox, LinkedIn and Slack. A typical case:
- The sender gives us a portrait taken on a phone. It is a tall photo with the person slightly left of centre.
- We open it in the pfp cropper, choose the circle shape and the 1024 preset, and move the frame until the face is centred with headroom above the hair.
- We download that 1024 x 1024 square as the master and use it for Slack, which accepts up to 1024 x 1024.
- From the same framing we export the X and LinkedIn 400 preset and a Discord 512 version for the client’s community server.
- We also export a transparent circle PNG for the team page and slide decks, where nothing crops the image automatically.
- For sign-off, we put every version in one file with combine JPG to PDF, then shrink it with the PDF compressor if needed.
Because every export shares the same framing, the person looks the same everywhere.
Frequently asked questions
What size should a Discord PFP be?
Use a square of 512 x 512 pixels or larger. The commonly cited minimum is 128 x 128 pixels, but bigger images stay sharper when Discord scales them.
Is the Discord PFP size the same for server icons?
Both are square and shown as circles, so the same 512 x 512 px square works well for a server icon. Keep logos well inside the circle.
Do I need to crop my picture into a circle before uploading?
No. Most platforms apply the circle themselves, so upload a centred square. A transparent circle PNG is useful for websites, slides and documents.
Why does Discord cut off part of my avatar?
Discord displays avatars as circles, so the corners of your square are hidden. Move the subject towards the centre and leave space around it.
Can I use a GIF as my Discord profile picture?
Only with Discord Nitro. Discord’s help centre lists animated GIF avatars as a Nitro feature; free accounts can use a still image.
How do I make two matching PFPs from one picture?
Crop the left and right halves of a wide image into two equal squares at the same size, or use a cropper with a matching pair mode.
Why is my profile picture blurry on mobile?
The source was probably too small or heavily compressed. Upload the original photo at 512 px or larger and use PNG for graphics.
Conclusion: key takeaways
Get the square right and every platform takes care of the circle. A centred, high-resolution master crop solves the Discord PFP size question and most blurry or cut-off avatar problems in one go.
- Use a square of 512 x 512 px or larger for Discord; 128 x 128 is only the minimum.
- Make one 1024 x 1024 master crop and export smaller platform sizes from it.
- Keep the face centred with headroom, because circle crops hide the corners.
- Export logos and art as PNG, and avoid forwarded or screenshot copies.
- Platforms change their specs, so upload larger than the stated minimum.
- Crop personal photos in a browser tool that never uploads the file.
