- 2
Check the separator
Tabs, commas, semicolons, pipes and runs of spaces are detected. Pick one yourself if the preview looks wrong.
- 3
Download the CSV
Click Convert to CSV, check the preview table and download. Use the semicolon option if your Excel uses a comma for decimals.
Why use this free TXT to CSV converter
Built for speed and privacy. It works on any modern browser, on desktop or phone.
Files never leave your device
It runs inside your browser. Nothing is uploaded to LeadCanal or stored anywhere.
Only the right files open
It accepts .txt, .tsv, .tab, .dat, .log and .prn and checks each file's first bytes, so renamed programs or scripts are refused.
Free with no limits we impose
No signup, no watermark and no daily cap. Big files depend only on your device memory.
Several files at once
Where it makes sense, drop many files and download them together as a ZIP.

The details that break CSV files, handled
Commas inside values
"New York, NY" is wrapped in quotes so it stays in one column.
Accents and symbols
The Excel-friendly option adds a UTF-8 marker so é, ñ and € open correctly.
Ragged rows
Short rows are padded so every row has the same number of columns.
Line breaks
Windows, Mac and Linux line endings are all handled.
Convert TXT to CSV in Excel instead
In Excel, go to Data, then From Text/CSV, choose the .txt file, pick the delimiter and click Load. Then use File, Save As and choose CSV UTF-8. It works, but takes more clicks and Excel may change long numbers and dates. This converter keeps every value exactly as written.
Step-by-step guides
Step-by-step help from our blog, written for the questions people ask most.
Your files stay on your device
This converter runs inside your browser, using your own computer or phone to do the work. The file is never uploaded to LeadCanal or anyone else, and nothing is saved on our servers. Close the tab and it is gone.
Each tool only opens the file types it is built for. We check the file extension and the first bytes of the file, so a renamed program or script is refused before it is opened.
Drop the .txt file into the converter above, check the preview and click Convert to CSV. The separator is detected automatically and the CSV downloads to your device.
Only if the text is already comma separated with correct quoting. Tab or space separated text renamed to .csv opens as a single column in Excel.
Excel guesses the encoding. Keep "Excel friendly" switched on and the CSV includes a UTF-8 marker that tells Excel how to read it.
Only your device memory. Files of tens of megabytes convert in seconds. For very large CSVs, use the CSV splitter afterwards.
